Tsukamoto Shark Taiko
Mary Tsukamoto Shark Taiko is an after school Japanese drumming group. Taiko is a modern musical art form that uses large and small drums, as well as, other percussion instruments. It is more than drumming, however, as in incorporates movement and traditional Japanese values and discipline. The children will learn rhythm, movement, how to work with others, and the value of being a group member. They will also get a chance to perform for our school.
In order to join, students must be in the 4th, 5th, or 6th grades and meet the following requirements:
- Taiko requires physical activity, much like martial
arts or sports. Children need to be in good physical condition and be able to
participate in stretching and muscle toning activities.
- Taiko, like any musical instrument, requires commitment
and practice. Children will need to come regularly during the times we are both
on track (I am on C track). If a child misses more that one practice per month
they may be put on probation or asked to leave the group.
- Appropriate and respectful behavior is expected at all
times. Children who misbehave will be given a warning. If behavior continues
they will be asked to leave the group.
- You will need to provide transportation after class if
they are unable to walk home.
- Money is not a requirement, however children will
probably want to purchase and finish their own bachi
(drumsticks) at a cost of about $3.00.
Sign ups are held at the beginning of the year. A child might be able to join later if there is room but they will probably have difficulty catching up on class material. Beginning classes are held either on Tuesdays or Wednesdays and intermediate classes are on Thursdays when C track is on. If you have any questions, please contact me (see homepage).
